In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Arun and
Patricia continue Fantasy Month with looking back on the 1991
film adaptation of The Princess and the Goblin by George
MacDonald and produced by the Pannonia Film Studio, Sianel 4
Cymru, and NHK. A princess named Irene has learned that there
evil creatures lurking about when she got lost in the woods one
evening and was rescued by a young boy named Curdie. He informs
her that there are goblins living underground and how to defeat
them. One day, she discovers a path to the attic where she meets
up with the spirit of her great-great grandmother Irene who gives
her a magic thread that will lead her to safety from harm.
Meanwhile, the prince of the goblins comes up with the idea to
kidnap Princess Irene and force her to marry him so they can take
over the surface. Curdie hears this news and rushes to the castle
to warn Irene and the king.

When the film premiered, it only made $2 million dollars out of
its $10 million dollar budget. It was criticized for being
uninteresting, boring, and poorly executed, especially since it
came out during the Disney Renaissance. It currently has a fan
rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. What did Arun and Patricia
think of the film? Listen and find out.
