INTRODUCTION: THE GREATEST MISSION STARTS AT HOME!


SCRIPTURE: 1 TIMOTHY 5:8


Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and
especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is
worse than an unbeliever.

Do you know what your legal responsibility is to them? Currently,
28 states have laws called filial responsibility laws, requiring
adult children to support their aging parents. In
addition, a bill passed in 2005 may place a heavier burden of
taking care of parents' nursing home bills on adult children.


Filial responsibility is defined as the following statement:"...
[laws that] impose a duty, usually upon adult children, for the
support of their impoverished parents or other relatives." This
law was enacted in various states after the Elizabethan Poor Law
of 1601.


Proverbs 30:17


17 "The eye that mocks a father, that scorns obedience to a
mother, will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley, and will
be eaten by the vultures.


The elderly, needy, and disabled are often seen as burdens rather
than blessings. Sometimes we are quick to forget the sacrifices
our parents made for us when they are in need of care themselves.
Instead of taking them into our homes—whenever that is safe and
feasible—we put them in retirement communities or nursing homes,
sometimes against their will. We may not value the wisdom they
have acquired through living long lives, and we can discredit
their advice as “outdated.”


 God intended from the beginning that the first level of
responsibility beyond one’s self is one’s immediate family, and
then one’s extended family, and then one’s church, then
community, then state, and then the world. Jesus rebuked the
Pharisees for missing this point (Mt 15:5).
