21: How Newport Beach Became the Kitty Hawk/Woodstock of Hang Gliding

On a sunny day in the spring of 1971, a ragtag group of
adventures gathered on a Newport Beach hilltop to participate in
the first hang-gliding meet in modern history. A front-page story
in the Los Angeles Times and an eight-page spread in National
Geographic magazine about the rickety flying machines and their
pilots captured the imagination of readers around the world and
launched the sport of hang gliding.
