The majority of people with autism do use spoken language but few
of them use it in the same way as individuals without autism.
The reason that this is so important for you to understand
is that often our kids are often communicators rather than
conversationalists and teaching conversation skills will likely
be something that you will continually have to work on with your
child if language is a challenge for them.

Many of the skills that are needed for conversation are the ones
that are the core deficits in autism.  Conversation is not
one way, it is interactive communication between two or more
people and it is often difficult for individuals with autism
because it is a dialogue, not a monologue.

Learning to think about others and understand social situations
are valuable skills that will help our kids in everyday
situations.
