The major result of the Pope's decision was that the Christian
Church in eastern Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and Turkey went its
own way and practiced a Christianity much more in accord with
scripture and the words of God and Jesus. To this day, the Eastern
Orthodox Church continues to follow this tradition of a "rigorous
obedience to Christ" and a life lead by believers as a campaign to
"defeat the self."
