Today, the Two Mikes were fortunate to again host journalist
Ed Yeranian for a discussion about some of the recent events
in the Middle East, evenst which he has been covering for more than
thirty years.
Mr. Yeranian explained that the recent, China-brokered resumption
of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia might well
turn out to be an important talking point, but little more than
window dressing. He said that talks had been occurring in Baghdad
between the Chinese and the Iranians and Saudis for the past 2.5
years and five individual bargaining sessions.
Formal relations between two are meant to be restored in two
months, but whether that occurs or not the deal can be seen as a
plus for the Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Muhammed Bin
Sultan as he approaches his transition to being king when his very
sick father passes away.
In regard to Yemen, Mr. Yeranian noted that while the
opposing sides in theYemeni war are negotiating a prisoner swap in
Geneva, peace in Yemen is still fairly far beyond the horizon as it
is very unlikely that the Iranians and the Houthi allies will stop
fighting.
Peace in Syria also is not likely as the champions of a natural-gas
pipeline running from Iraq, through northern Syria, to the
Mediterranean Sea have little interest in peace unless a pipeline
is guaranteed.
He also mentioned that Syria is slowly returning to the Arab
fold.
The UAE has reopened its embassy in Damascus and Tunisia may soon
do likewise. The Arab League, however, is still keeping Damascus at
arm's length.
