In this special edition of Disability Talks, host Shelly Houser
passes the mic off to Executive Director Stephanie Quigley as she
interviews Genine Bashore and her son Jake, who has autism. April
is Autism Awareness Month, but Genine presents a compelling
argument for moving from “awareness” to “acceptance.” Genine gets
real about the journey from Jake’s diagnosis to adulthood, with
commentary about the social isolation often prevalent in the
lives of adults with autism. As we consider the detrimental
effects of social distancing and isolation during this pandemic,
Genine and Stephanie encourage us to remember that social
isolation remains a persistent problem for adults with autism who
may struggle with building social networks and engaging in social
interaction. Let’s move from a passive awareness to an active
acceptance of people with autism.
