Juliet Trail is the Managing Director of the UVA Contemplative
Sciences Center (CSC). In this role, she helps to manage the
projects and initiatives of the center, which constitute a wide
variety of efforts that span the 11 schools of UVA and involve
research, learning and practice. She has a particular focus on
faculty engagement programs that help to connect faculty and
classrooms with contemplative and mindfulness pedagogies, and she
teaches the class “Mindfulness & Compassion: Living Fully
Personally & Professionally” each spring semester.
Juliet holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education from the UVA Curry School
of Education. She also holds an M.A. in Vocal Performance &
Pedagogy from New Mexico State University (2002). She holds
Bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Music (Piano Performance) from
Guilford College (1996). Music is still an active passion of her
life and she is lead singer of Charlottesville band Phoenix Noir,
and also has a duo band called U.S. with her husband, Jeremy
Johnson.
Juliet also designed and taught a course merging principles of art
therapy with reflective approaches from traditional Native American
Medicine Wheel teachings, called, “Everyday Shamanism: Discovering
Expression for Balance and Harmony.” She has taught this class in
N.C. and New Mexico. Juliet trained in Rites of Passage work
involving Vision Quests following the Lakota Sioux Tradition from
1996-1999 and continues today to walk a path of integration of the
arts, sciences, and contemplative traditions.
