Episode Notes
Themes: conflict resolution, communication skills, vulnerability,
shame, emotional intimacy, men
Men have been through some stuff. Between high expectations on
who they should be, plus the inability to "open up" without being
perceived as weak, it seems like there is no emotional safety
zone for the guys out there.
Except for their relationship. The special person they've chosen
to build a life with.
But what happens when we - or their past partners - become
harmful as well? (Note: I am generalizing and speaking to the
male-female dynamic in heteronormative relationships, but this
can apply to anyone). I've heard horror stories of what men have
experienced from women who may or may not be aware of the damage
they've caused...
"I'll never open up again" is usually the end result.
If you can listen to this episode with an open heart. No need to
be defensive; if these aren't your behaviors, then it doesn't
apply to you! Maybe you'll learn more about how his mother or
past partners impacted who he is today. But also...get that
mirror out and let's consider the ways we may be unintentionally
reinforcing the very outcome that we don't want. And...how to
change so that our actions encourage emotional vulnerability and
safety in our relationships.
