There is a saying, "the weight of the world is on my shoulders."
This is often said by those who are burdened down with heavy
things in life. Heavy things of the heart and mind. There are
earthly things, and spiritual things. There are many scenarios of
what those weights are that people have been bearing through long
years and longsufferings. Yet those that belong to Jesus Christ
are those that continue to "bear upon their shoulders" by choice.
No matter how hard and bad things get. No matter how many times
they have reached their many ends, the same choice comes down to
it. They choose to go on with Christ. Because there is something
far stronger than themselves. That something is a Someone. It is
the life of Jesus Christ.
The Kohathites were "given the charge of the service of the
sanctuary, belonging unto them was that they should bear upon
their shoulders." And "their charge shall be the ark, and the
table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of
the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the hanging, and all
the service thereof." (Numbers 3:31; 7:9).
To them was committed the care of the most precious things,
things too precious to be carried in any other way. Perhaps you
are wondering why it is you. Why it has always been you that has
been bearing upon your shoulders, the lives of people you love in
prayer to the Lord. And the spiritual cares of all of those who
show no signs of improvement. Have you considered that it may be
a charge given to you because Jesus knew He could trust you with
what is precious to Him? Because He knew before He chose you that
you would be faithful to in it?
Remember the Shepherd took the lost sheep, and a sheep is
a heavy thing, and laid it on his shoulders. If the Good
Shepherd asks us to bear upon our shoulders the care of souls,
surely it is because that burden is too precious to be carried in
any other way. He will provide you with strength when it gets too
hard. The Father gave 'special strength' to His well-beloved Son
Jesus Christ during His life. He did it for Him and our Father in
heaven will do it also for you. You are a member of the Household
now.
"Sometimes when we read the words of those who have been more
than conquerors, we feel almost despondent. I feel that I shall
never be like that. But they won through step by step, by little
bits of wills, little denials of self, little inward victories,
by faithfulness in very little things. They became what they are.
No one sees these little hidden steps. They only see the
accomplishment, but even so, those small steps were taken. There
is no sudden triumph, no spiritual maturity. That is the work of
the moment.” -- Amy Carmichael
