All of us from one time or another have had to go with a "gut
feeling" on something. That gut feeling is part of how God
created us. We have learned to listen to a place within us that
goes beyond the ability to know or understand something. It is a
deep sense that has a warning voice, so to speak. Whenever I have
not gone with my gut feeling I have paid a great price. On the
other hand when I have sided with my gut, I narrowly avoided a
disaster.
However, when a person receives Salvation the Holy Spirit makes
His abode within their spirit. He is the third Person of the
God-head. He is the very life of the Father and the Son who live
within that person by virtue of the Holy Spirit. He
gives us a discernment that is far deeper than a gut feeling. He
is a very real person, and He gives discernment in every
situation to protect us. Paul tells wrote, "For who hath known
the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the
mind of Christ."
There must be our part however in the exercising ourselves in the
word of God in order to get His mind on things. Those who do so
can honestly say there is something within them that causes them
to "press forward to the things that lie ahead." There is the
"upward call in Christ." Something no human theologist, or best
of the teacher can give us. No, there is a hunger from what can
only come from the upward source. That something is Someone, the
beautiful Holy Spirit of the Living God.
Also the Holy Spirit will give discernment in what seems like a
hundred different ways through our lives. He gives us discernment
in false teachers and people that seem like real brothers and
sisters. He gives discernment at times when we feel that turning
left instead of right while driving, is something to obey not
understanding or knowing why. Only to find out later, there was a
horrible accident. The Holy Spirit mingles with our spirit and
prompts us, guides us, warns us, and convicts us. He knows what
we cannot know, because He sees what we cannot see. Jesus says,
"He will take what is of Mine and shew it to thee."
Stay in the word of God, let it fill you up. Never let your eyes
depart from it, and as you grow up in Christ, your discernment
will be a source of great comfort and safety in the Lord in every
situation. "You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring
whose waters never fail." "Discernment is not knowing the
difference between right and wrong. It is knowing the difference
between right and almost right. ~ C. H. Spurgeon
