For about a few weeks I have been noticing thoughts coming into
my mind about the "what-if's" of my life. Thinking about what if
I had lived somewhere else? What if I had never did such and
such? These thoughts are very natural to all people as they grow
older. I think we cannot help but think those thoughts, and how
things could have turned out better or different according to our
own surmising. However, I had noticed that these thoughts started
to plague me, and it was not at random times.
It happened to be only during that time I would read my Bible in
the morning. What started out as natural became empowered by the
enemy. I started spending more and more time fending him off of
me, making reading difficult. I have been sick for a couple of
weeks so my strength was abated. I did not have full force of
fighting power. I did what I could in direct prayer to the Lord
to help me. Until I started gaining strength and standing my
ground.
I started really thinking about all the "what-if's" in times past
differently when I read in a letter written by Samuel Rutherford,
dated 1640, he speaks of how hard it is to be patient if we allow
our thoughts to become stuck "down among the confused rollings
and wheels of second causes." By this he means all the
times we say, "If only I hadn't been in the wrong place," or "If
only I'd gone a different time." He means a subtle temptation to
link together earthly causes-and-effects. To fight against this
temptation, to escape the confused, grinding, second wheels of
this human "logic." Rutherford cries to us from across history:
"Look up! Look to the Master-motion and the first wheel."
During the time I read his words I came across this verse in
Isaiah 57:15: " For thus saith the high and lofty One that
inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and
holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble
spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the
heart of the contrite ones." [Who dwell in and inhabit time].
A freedom and lightness came over my soul, and peace flooded in
like the shining light of the sun when the shutters are thrown
open in a dark room. I then saw that Jesus Christ is, and has
always been, and always will be Master of time and eternity.
Yours and mine. There are no second causes, no other wheel-house.
"We see hardly one inch of the narrow land of time. To our God,
eternity lies open as a meadow." ~Amy Carmichael
