One day Jesus went into Capernaum into a house believed by
scholars to be the home of Simon Peter. Jesus heard His twelve
disciples "disputing in the way about who would be the greatest."
When they got into the house He asked them why they were
disputing about this. He gathered them together and sat down. He
took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and He had taken
him in his arms. 


When I was reading this portion of scripture this morning it
struck me. That child was the only one in that room whom Jesus
had enfolded His arms around and embraced. Jesus also embraced
other little children when His disciples tried to forbid those
bringing them to Him. In another place there were those who were
bringing young children to Jesus for Him to touch them. Jesus
also embraced these little children in His arms after His
disciples tried to forbid those bringing them to Him. 


The Canaanite woman first came to Jesus in Matthew 15:21, "And
his disciples came and besought Him, saying, Send her away; for
she crieth after us." No, she did not come to them, it says she
came to HIM, and He healed her daughter of grievous demonic
possession.  


That little boy in Simon Peter's home was most likely his son
whom later, was known as one of the powerful, mighty, early
church fathers. Ignatius Theophorus of Antioch who died a martyr
like his father Simon Peter long before. Jesus is not interested
in anybody's ambition to be the greatest, or the first, but to be
abandoned unto Him completely. 


I think that we all will be called to account about our ambitious
disputes, especially about being greater than others. The best
wisest thing is to rid ourselves of it all as filthy garbage fit
for the oven of God now. Those who are most humble and
self-denying, most resemble Christ, and shall be most tenderly
owned by him. This Jesus taught them by a sign; "whoever shall
receive one like this child, receives me."   


Many have been like the disciples, ready to silence those who
have success in preaching to sinners repentance in Christ's name,
because they follow not with them. Jesus blamed the apostles,
reminding them that he who wrought miracles in his name would not
be likely to hurt his cause. If sinners are brought to repent, to
believe in the Savior, and to live sober, righteous, and godly
lives, we then see that the Lord works by the worker of Christ.
 


The enfolding, embracing, everlasting arms of Christ is symbolic
of the intimate union between Him and such children. Let His
outstretched arms hold you inward to Himself now.
