February of 2014 police received a distressed call from an ex
boyfriend of Meriel.  After a fight during which he and Meriel
broke up, he went over to another woman’s place. There, he received
a call from Meriel which he hoped was purely a ploy to lure him
back.  But this, sadly, was not the case. She had called to
tell him she smothered her own 3 year old daughter Lela to death
with a pillow. Meriel Bemis plead guilty to the killing of her
daughter later that same year.
