Dr Patrick Dwyer — Transforming Regional Training

Taking the skills he learned in the city to a new environment, Dr
Patrick Dwyer is a prime example of how one individual doctor can
make a huge impression in a regional setting. He’s dreamed of
living the regional lifestyle since childhood, and by way of
placements in Central Queensland, has spent the last decade
working in radiation oncology at Lismore Base Hospital. This
father-of-triplets says he’s chosen radiation oncology as a
career because he thrives on the face-to-face patient contact. He
says he has become a better clinician through the generalist
nature of cases he has encountered, and through the mentorship of
senior specialists. But just as importantly, he’s given back to
his chosen community, by initiating a successful move to accredit
Lismore as a radiation oncology teaching hospital.
