In 1859, an American settler shot a pig rooting around a garden
on San Juan Island. A group of Islands in what would become
Washington State, the incident triggered the last border incident
between the Great Britain and the United States. Rather than
going to war, the two nations agreed to a joint occupation that,
in 1871 was settled peacefully. It set the foundation for the
'special relationship' that would dominate the twentieth century.
