The definition of PTSD, or "PTS" as some may refer to it as, is a
psychiatric disorder that can occur in people who have experienced
or witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a
serious accident, a terrorist act, war/combat, rape or other
violent personal assault. Meaning, this can and will happen to
people outside of the military, first responders and the like. This
impacts everyone and it can often go unseen, as we typically don't
relate a lot of our problems back to "PTSD".
This week we welcome Candace from "Your Six", an organization that
empowers and helps heroes and their families through confidential
peer support, gatherings and social events. Her tactics are not
typical or traditional, as being a first responder and veteran
herself, she knows that talking to others in our fields works much
better than some "old man/lady" from the local Critical Incident
team. Her theory is that she, and others, can relate with the
stresses of the day to day workflow in this profession. They
understand what a person with PTSD is going through and have
developed ways to circumvent the terror behind it. If you feel the
need to reach out, even confidentially, look no further. These are
trained professionals, in our professions, that can help you
through those tough times, and give you a plan for a brighter
future!
