When The Next Generation premiered, many people were surprised to
see a Klingon on the bridge of the Enterprise. With the Klingons
no longer positioned as the enemy of the Federation, the writers
had to bring in a new foe for the crew to battle. Thus the
infamous Ferengi were born—and buried within a few short
