One unique aspects of The Next Generation was a relic
of The Original Series, though one we never saw. It was
something Gene Roddenberry had wanted to show but couldn't—a
separating ship. Finally, in TNG's pilot episode "Encounter at
Farpoint," we got to see just what it would look like for
the Enterprise's saucer and hull to go their separate ways.
