The Huntington State Hospital and Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum,
are two historic mental health institutions located in West
Virginia, USA. These institutions have a controversial history,
with reports of patient mistreatment and inhumane conditions,
including overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, physical abuse,
forced sterilization, and experimentation. Despite these dark
aspects, both institutions have also played an important role in
the development of mental health care, with Huntington State
Hospital is known for its experimental approaches to treatment
and Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum now a tourist attraction and
National Historic Landmark. Join us as we explore the history of
these two institutions.
