GEORGIA RADIO - John McEuen recently spoke with Matt Jolley from
Georgia Radio about his latest projects, including a new
children's book plus his latest album. The children's
book, The Mountain Whippoorwill: (Or, How Hill-Billy Jim Won
the Great Fiddlers’ Prize), is now available and can be
found here.
The Mountain Whippoorwill, originally published
in Century magazine in 1925, tells the story of a young
underdog who triumphs over established local musicians, as
described by Benét's subtitle, “How Hill-Billy Jim Won the Great
Fiddlers’ Prize.” Steve Martin praised McEuen's adaptation,
highlighting his ability to combine music and storytelling
seamlessly.
Born in Oakland, CA, in 1945, John McEuen's musical journey began
at 16 while working in a magic shop with Steve Martin. As a
co-founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, McEuen's
departure after 50 years led him to explore solo projects and new
creative paths. He is renowned for orchestrating the
groundbreaking Will the Circle Be Unbrokenalbum and has
earned numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy, CMA, and
ACM awards.
McEuen's prolific career includes over 40 albums (six solo),
numerous awards, and contributions to over 25 albums as a guest
artist. He also produced Steve Martin's The Crow, which won
the 2010 Best Bluegrass Album Grammy. His Music of the Wild
West CD received the Western Heritage Award, and his
popular Acoustic Traveller show is now in its 16th year
on Sirius/XM's The Bridge.
McEuen has also ventured into producing albums, writing books,
and exploring spoken-word projects. His upcoming album, The
Newsman, available everywhere, features fascinating stories and
poems spanning over 100 years, accompanied by music. For more
