Today's Episode Dr. Raj talks with Candace Cable about her life and
journey after becoming disabled from a spinal cord injury early in
her life. She talks about advocating for disabled persons, the
history of disability rights in the United States, and her
motivation and influence to become an athlete. Today's Guest
Candace is an active native Angeleno who sustained a spinal cord
injury in a car accident in 1975 at the age of 21. The injury
upended her entire body/mind system and made her a part of the
diverse disabled community. Candace is a celebrated athlete: she is
a 9-time Winter & Summer Paralympian, a 12-time medalist in 3
sports, a winner of 84 marathons, including 6 Boston Marathons, and
a US Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Famer. She has realized that
her sport platform is the perfect platform to dismantle ableism,
racism, and the negative stigmas that people with disabilities
experience in daily life. Candace advocates domestically and
globally for opportunities and human rights for all people. She has
worked with the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, Open Doors
organization, UNICEF, the US State Department Speaker and
Specialist program, Drunk History, and has served as the ADA lead
on several productions. She was the Director of Paralympic and
Disability Engagement on the LA2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games
Bid organization. She regularly attends and participates at the
United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with
Disabilities and in the 2030 sustainable development goals. Candace
is currently working as the Head of Community & User Insights
at Aurie, a startup company building reusable medical assets. She
is also a board member of the US International Council on
Disabilities, the Southern California Olympian and Paralympian
Association, and a commissioner for the city of Los Angeles mayor's
Disability Commission, as well as a volunteer wheelchair racing
coach for Angel City Sports. Candace loves Los Angeles and her
disability community. Follow Candace on Instagram Follow Candace on
