Rewriting the book of campaign rules once more, Donald Trump is skipping Thursday's GOP debate and attacking the Fox News Channel.
Instead of attending the debate, "We'll have an event here in Iowa, with potentially another network, to raise money for wounded warriors," campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said. "And Fox will go from probably having 24 million viewers to about 2 million."
The fracas escalated quickly on Tuesday, but was the culmination of months of tension between the GOP frontrunner and the Fox News host Megyn Kelly. At a press conference Tuesday evening Trump said he was outraged by a "wiseguy" press release that Fox issued earlier in the day. In it, Fox playfully mocked Trump.
Donald Trump has hit a new high in the race for the Republican nomination, according to a new CNN/ORC Poll, with more than 4-in-10 Republican voters nationwide now saying they back the billionaire. And more than two-thirds of Republicans say he's the candidate most likely to capture their party's presidential nomination.
Trump has topped the 40% mark for the first time in CNN/ORC polling, standing at 41%. That more than doubles the support of his nearest competitor, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who notches 19% support in the poll. No other candidate hit double-digits. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio landed at 8%, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson at 6%, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 5%, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at 4%, and the rest at 3% or less.
President Barack Obama will meet at the White House Wednesday with Sen. Bernie Sanders, days after heaping praise upon the Vermont senator's rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, Hillary Clinton.
In a statement, White House press secretary Josh Earnest described the upcoming meeting as "informal," saying Obama and Sanders discussed arranging the session during last month's Congressional Holiday Ball.
"The two will meet privately in the Oval Office and there will be no formal agenda," Earnest wrote.
Authorities described the three fugitives who escaped from Orange County's Central Jail in Southern California as a trio of extremely dangerous men.
Hossein Nayeri, 37, allegedly abducted a man in 2012, poured bleach on him, set the victim on fire, severed his penis and dumped him in the desert along with a woman who was unharmed. The man survived, Orange County Lt. Dave Sawyer said.
After being charged with five felonies in that case, Nayeri allegedly fled to Iran and was arrested at an airport in the Czech Republic in November 2013 while traveling to Spain, authorities said. He was extradited to the United States 10 months later.
Jonathan Tieu, 20, is charged with murder and attempted murder in a gang-related attack. Authorities say he is a documented member of a Vietnamese gang.
Officials said 43-year-old Bac Tien Duong, who faces attempted murder charges, also has Vietnamese gang affiliations.
