The long and winding road to the Republican nomination. Following his loss in the Wisconsin primary, Donald Trump is entering the final stretch of the 2016 Republican primary contest facing an uphill battle to capture the 1,237 delegates required to clinch the nomination and avoid a convention showdown. He currently leads the pack with 746 delegates, trailed by Ted Cruz, at 510, and John Kasich, who sits third among the remaining GOP hopefuls with 145. To hit the magic number by the end of the primary schedule, Trump would need to win delegates at an increasing rate — a possibility bolstered by a series of upcoming winner-take-all (or close to it) contests that could turbocharge his pace. For Cruz, the path is narrower. He would require something close to a clean sweep going forward to lock up the nomination outright. Kasich is mathematically eliminated from reaching 1,237 delegates. His only hope of winning would come after multiple ballots at the convention. Clinton, Sanders to meet for Brooklyn debate. Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have agreed to meet for a Democratic debate on CNN and NY1 on April 14, five days before a crucial primary election in New York state. Sanders: Clinton nervous about losing New York primary. The debate will take place in Brooklyn and will be moderated by CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who led two GOP debates earlier this election season.
