The surface free energy describes the physical effects at boundary
surfaces. It appears conceivable to optimize the surface free
energy of restorative materials and to shift them into a range,
where the initial adhesion of bacteria became more difficult. It is
expected that materials with a surface energy lower than 38 mJ/m2
or higher than 123 mJ/m2 will accumulate less Plaque. This study
describes 18 different restorative materials (amalgam, gold,
composite, glass ionomer cement, ormocer and compomer). The
influence increasing roughness on the surface free energy and the
distribution into dispers and polar portions was determined. Metals
exhibited lowest values (gold alloy and amalgam). The surface free
energy of gold alloy was below 38 mJ/m2. The surface free energies
of composites, compomers, ormocers and glass ionomer cement was
between the range of (46-49) mJ/m2. Increasing surface roughness
caused a rise of the surface free energy of all materials.
