  4. #EP 55 Kenya's Gen Z: Digitally Connected, United in Resistance
In 2024, there were major protests in Kenya, driven by a younger
generation demonstrating against President Ruto, his policies and
living conditions in the country. In this episode, we discuss the
role young people play in this, how the protest is nonetheless
intergenerational, what we can learn from this for the German
context, and how colonial history and resistance to it continue
to shape the nature of protest in Kenya to this day.

Our guests are Anna Keppel and Cornelius Henning. Anna is
studying ‘Global and European Transformations’ at the Middle East
Technical University in Ankara and Humboldt University in Berlin,
and is working on a project with ‘Humanity in Action’. Cornelius
is studying political science at the Otto Suhr Institute in
Berlin. In 2024, the two of them undertook a voluntary social
year (FSJ) at the Kenyan National Commission for UNESCO in
Nairobi, which brought them into contact with local projects and
the protests taking place there. We’ll be talking to them about
the distinctive features of these protests and the role that Gen
Z is currently playing in democratic movements worldwide.

We first published this episode in German at the end of August.
To make it more accessible to international listeners, and
especially to people in Kenya, we decided to record it again in
English.

Podcast-Folgen verschwinden.
