Die Neue: Henrietta Lidchi Seit Mai 2026 haben das Ethnologische
Museum und das Museum für Asiatische Kunst eine neue Direktorin:
Henrietta Lidchi. Frisch aus New Mexico nach Berlin gezogen,
erzählt uns Henrietta von ihrer bisherigen Laufbahn und was sich in
diesen 30 Jahren im Museumsbereich verändert hat.
Provenienzforschung läuft heute anders, Kollaboration wird neu
verstanden, ein Prozess zur Diversifizierung der Belegschaft von
Museen hat begonnen. Außerdem beleuchtet sie, inwiefern die
Gründungsgeschichte eines Museums unter Umständen für seine Arbeit
deutlich wichtiger sein kann als das Land, in dem es steht. Und wie
schätzt Henrietta das Humboldt Forum und seine Arbeit ein?
Henrietta Lidchi, geboren 1966 in London, UK, arbeitete von 1994
bis 2002 in verschiedenen Funktionen im British Museum in London.
Nach einigen Jahren im Ministerium für Kultur, Medien und Sport, wo
sie Strategieprogramme für Museen und Bibliotheken entwarf, war sie
von 2005 bis 2017 bei den National Museums of Scotland beschäftigt.
Nach einer Station im Wereldmuseum in Leiden, Niederlande, leitete
sie von 2021 bis April 2026 das Wheelwright Museum of the American
Indian in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. In ihrer Feldforschung setzte
Henrietta den Fokus auf den Schmuck Indigener Amerikaner*innen,
etwa der Navajo, Zuni Pueblo oder Hopi, im Südwesten der USA. The

Lidchi. Recently arrived in Berlin from New Mexico, Henrietta told
us about her career up till now and how the museum business has
changed during these 30 years: provenance research works
differently today, collaboration is exploring new ways, a process
of diversifying museum staff has started. Additionally, she
highlighted how a museum’s founding history may be a lot more
important for its work than in which country it is located. And how
does Henrietta see the Humboldt Forum and its work? Henrietta
Lidchi, born in 1966 in London, UK, worked at the British Museum in
London in different positions from 1994 to 2002. After some years
in the Department for Culture, Media and Sports, where she
developed policies for museums and libraries, she was Keeper at the
National Museums of Scotland from 2005 to 2017. After a stint at
the Wereldmuseumin Leiden, Netherlands, she was director of the
Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe, New Mexico,
USA. In her field research, Henrietta focussed on the jewelry of
Indigenous Americans, e. g. the Navajo, Zuni Pueblo, or Hopi in the
Southwest of the USA.
