You may remember the Industrial Revolution as that part of your history text book where they started throwing numbers and statistics at you. And while that of course is a fair way to understand what happened when mechanisation transformed the way people had worked for quite literally thousands of years, there are things about the everyday life of people that has so far often stayed hidden. Archaeologist Kieran Gleave (PhD Candidate in Heritage Studies, Sidney Sussex College, University of Cambridge) shows what the material record tells us about the lives of millions who worked in factories under conditions which are unthinkable to us today. It tells a story of large-scale transformation of economy and peoples’ way of live, of human ingenuity but also poverty and exploitation - and the heritage of this story that lives on to this day. The beast of Imperialism is once again rearing its ugly head - and since February 24th, when Russia started its brutal war of aggression against Ukraine, it has come to the West’s attention as well. What is the historical background of this latest example of Russia’s aggressive expansionism? Professor of the History of Russia and the Caucasus and Fellow at Clare College, Cambridge, Hubertus Jahn takes an in depth look at the imperial past of Tsarist Russia and the legacy of this imperialism that lived on in the Soviet Union and continues to inform Russian foreign policy to this day. As an expert for Georgia and the Caucasus, Professor Jahn also gives a detailed analysis on the impact Russian rule had on Georgia, its society and culture - but also the influence of Georgia on Russia. Einer davon ist der Paragraph 175 des deutschen Strafgesetzbuches, der Homosexualität unter Strafe stellte und bis 1994 gültig war. Welche Schikanen hatten Homosexuelle durch dieses Gesetz zu erleiden? Woher kam es und warum dauerte es so lange, bis es aufgehoben wurde? Und welche Unterschiede gab es in der Kriminalisierung von Homosexualität in der Bundesrepublik im Vergleich mit der DDR? Und wie kann es einer Gesellschaft gelingen, Diskriminierung und Vorurteile zu überkommen und Stück für Stück abzubauen?
