The red and yellow trains of the Berlin S-Bahn are an iconic part
of today’s cityscape of the German capital. However, during the
Cold War and the division of Berlin the railway systems themselves
were divided between East and West while at the same time also
transcending the borders within the city. It therefore played a
critical role in the construction of space, the establishment of
the two politically and culturally opposed halves of the city and
future urban planning in Berlin. In this podcast, Hannah Siegrist,
who received the HiKo_21 - Young Scientists Award for her project
in 2024, illustrates how in the so-called ‚Space Wars‘ the Berlin
railway infrastructure became one of the major assets in the
ideological struggle between East and West. She describes the major
protagonists involved as well as taking a look at the consequences
which are still visible in the reunified city today.
