This is a very spontaneous series of specials of my podcast heliumTALK. I call them „The Isolation Episodes“, and for these I am speaking with people from the art world about the current situation we’re all facing these days. I just want to know how artists and gallerists from different countries are dealing with being locked down. My guest today is Caro Buermann, main curator at Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles who is currently in Tokio with the artist Hikari Shimoda.

It has only been 2 weeks since our last "Off the record"-show, but you may remember we had some technical issues and were cut off before we got to the more constructive part. And that is what we are focusing on today! Also the show is now split into two parts: first we talk about ideas for alternative business models or the relationship between artists and galleries in difficult market conditions as we are experiencing them in recent years. We are touching on a really delicate issue here …. Then we move on to a more lighter topic and start telling anecdotes from our long time in the business. We speak about our early Miami-experiences and good times with FriendsWithYou and David Choe, we tell stories about artists we worked or still work with such as Doze Green and Boris Hoppek, or our Brazilian connections such as Speto and Zezão and more. We are both looking forward to expanding the storytelling, it also helps you get a more positive picture of us maybe, in case you get tired listening to our struggles and the frustration with the shitty art business today - which we may have placed too much emphasis on lately, but we still haven’t found satisfying answers yet, so please bear with us. However - if you are still interested in our professional and definitely educated opinion on this please listen to the first roundabout 30 minutes of todays heliumtalk and see if you’d like to engage with us more, for example by sending an email to hello@heliumtalk.com or a message on my instagram @heliumcowboy to include your thoughts in our discussion. PS: A new photo of Jonathan - by photographer Elisaveta Stoilova!

This is the very first podcast in 2020. It was also the first I recorded in 2020. I was doing this while I was in the farmhouse. It has been a while since the last english language heliumTALK, and it also has been a while since I last spoke with my friend Jonathan LeVine. Late in 2018 we started to record a loose series of shows where we talk among friends and with no boundaries about the business, and that is why we call these episodes: Off the Record!

Kathryn Mikesell and her Husband Dan started Fountainhead Miami, a residency program for artists over a decade ago. When I met Kathryn on one of these crazy Miami art fairs back then they had just started their venture and I have admired their relentless work on helping artists to build sustainable careers and at the same time cultivate new audiences for the arts. Privately run residencies are a beautiful thing, because just think about it, there are people who love art so much that they dedicate their personal time and resources and of course their money to give artists a place where they can create freely, in a different environment, landscape and often mentality for a certain amount of time. It’s not just the love for the arts, it is also about understanding the needs of artists and encouraging the process of how art gets into this world in the first place. It really takes a lot, which makes all that Fountainhead stands for today eben more impressive to me and I am so happy that Kathryn found the time to talk with me in my podcast.

This week I will keep the intro to a minimum. Because in this show I have no guest, and I haven’t even recorded it myself. This is my speech from the Creative Mornings session I was so kindly invited to speak at last month. The topic was MUSE. I believe I said everything I had to say about MUSE in the 30 minutes you get as a speaker, so here all that is left to do is to send out a very warm and big thank you to the nice team of volunteers from the Creative Mornings Hamburg Chapter, to the large number of guests that came to hear me speak, and a special one to Rachel Beyerlein, who invited me and said all those nice things about me in her introduction, which is the starting point for this special episode of the heliumTALK podcast. PS: The Q&A starts with a very short sound issue on the first question. But after that all is perfect again.

My guest today: the artist Jaybo Monk. Is there really anything I need to say about him? He has been around some time, creating an intense body of work, he is showing internationally at great galleries for many years his work is part of huge collections, such as the Dean Collection of Swizz Beats and Alicia Keyes, and his early background is as exciting as his art. In short: He ran away from his home in France when he was 14, lived on the streets of Paris and Toulouse, made Hip-Hop Music and Street Acting and of course Street Art, travelled a lot, came to Berlin in the 80ies - a very different town back then - co-founded the magazine “Style and the Family Tunes“ and the fashion-label „Irie Daily“, both in the 90ies, and for me is simply one of the most influential artists of our times. I am a very a huge fan of his for a long time, so I was more than happy when he got in touch as he visited Hamburg and we could sit down at my studio to talk.

Laurence Vallières is a Canadian sculptor from Quebec, she works with recycled cardboard and builds incredibly realistic animals that often are larger than life. She has been showing internationally at galleries, institutions and many Urban Art Festivals. She even created two of her oversized gorillas for Burning Man 2016. She has only been around a few years in the art world, but has already made a big name for herself because of the uniqueness of her work. I first met Laurence a few years ago when I did an interview with her for the german newspaper Die Zeit. She was part of the Knotenpunkt Festival in Hamburg in 2014 and has returned twice since. When she came to grace this years Knotenpunkt at the Affenfaust Galerie it was the perfect opportunity to invite her to the studio and record a show with her.

Already part 8 of my ongoing conversation with Jonathan. I can keep the intro short 'cos you probably know by now who we are and why we call these special shows „Off the record“. And if not - there are 7 more of these talks online, so please feel free to check out our past episodes. One to recommend: heliumtalk number 44. That one is really special.
heliumTALK - das Kunstgespräch
For „heliumTALK – Das Kunstgespräch“ Jörg & Melvin Heikhaus meet with interesting people from the art world. Conversations are in English or German.
