This thesis aims at the implementation of a novel system of quality of life (QoL) diagnostics and therapy for patients with breast cancer in a defined region. The relevance of this QoL system for the treatment was analyzed as well as the influence of specific cut-off points on the rate of patients classified as diseased. A further point of interest consisted in the effect of the implementation program on attitude and behavior of the physicians involved. Based on social-psychological methods for influencing behavior, this system was introduced into clinical routine by means of outreach visits, opinion leaders, and interactive quality circles. Quality of life data were self-reported by patients (EORTC-QLQ-C30 plus BR23), whereas physicians filled in a health status questionnaire for every patient. Based on theoretical reasoning and empirical results, a cut-off point was defined to record individual deficits in quality of life that required treatment. Empirical results about group decision processes were systematically considered for the development of a judgment system that integrates relevant information and recommends specific therapies. Thirty-eight coordinating physicians, who were identified on the basis of their documentation for the Tumor Center Regensburg, recorded the data of 170 patients with regard to quality of life and health status. Both samples were representative for the underlying population. Quality of life diagnostics resulted in relevant additional information that could not be predicted by either socio-demographic or medical data. The cut-off point classified 9 to 37% of patients as sick and in need of treatment. These rates corresponded to epidemiologic findings in the literature. The use of established evaluation models revealed the structural prerequisites of the project as well as each step of implementation. Furthermore, it showed a positive attitude of the physicians towards the QoL system, an acceptable execution of the recommended QoL therapies, and an extensive commitment at the subsequent randomized trial. Further research should analyze the actual benefit of the QoL system for the treatment of patients, a validation of the cut-off point, and a further exploration of methods to overcome barriers for implementation. In a nutshell, this paper demonstrates that QoL should be systematically integrated, based on social-psychological concepts and methods, into the treatment of patients with breast cancer.

Mental simulations and implementation intentions are two self-regulation techniques that further successful goal attainment. The present research examined whether the two mindsets associated with the two techniques differed regarding processing of information. The first two studies indicated that mental simulation induces a mindset associated with more open-minded processing of information, while implementation intentions induce a mindset associated with more closed-minded processing of information. The final two studies investigated activation levels of mental representations of mental simulation and implementation intention via a lexical decision task. Forming implementation intentions was found to result in heightened activation of both situational cues and behavioral responses compared to mental simulation. The implications of these findings are discussed on the basis of the model of action phases.

There is a general agreement that we have entered the information economy, that higher education is a critical element in this knowledge society. This has placed a new demand on its teaching and research functions, with growing emphasis on lifelong learning and more flexible forms of higher education delivery. Notwithstanding, there is also a widespread scepticism as to whether educational systems will be able to overcome their traditional inertia and respond to the challenge of the knowledge-based revolution. Currently the prominence of ICT and other external influencing factors; economic, social, cultural and the changing role of governmental policy are driving the inner life of the higher education sector. In that respect many higher educational institutions are turning to e-learning technologies for improving the quality of learning by means of access to resources, services, long distance collaborations and exchanges. However this transition has been characterized by a mixed sense of optimism, skeptism and a lack of “adequate benchmarks”. It is within this background that this explorative study sought to carry out a descriptive comparison between Germany, UK and the USA with the objective of identifying the current trends, establishing tendencies of differences or similarities and identifying future trends (next 5 years) across the three countries. This is directed at synthesising “best practices” which could facilitate international knowledge transfer and the future development of e-learning. In pursuance of these aims the study employed the use of both quantitative and qualitative data sources. In obtaining the quantitative data, national and international reports that detail out the activities of e-learning in higher educational institutions across the three countries were reviewed and relevant data filtered. Further explanations, clarifications as well as predictions of future trends were sought through expert interviews (n=30 experts). The findings indicate that: 1) The three countries did not exhibit much differences in terms of policy however they exhibited differences in terms of strategy and tactics in e-learning. 2) The three countries exhibited differences in terms of the prevalent e-learning technologies used as well as the application of such technologies. 3) In terms of didactical approaches and orientation to either local or international markets the three countries exhibited differences iv) In terms of impact and limiting factors the three countries exhibited differences in scale and proportion though qualitative impact was difficult to estimate. 5) In terms of future trends or scenarios different projections were made across the three countries. The implications of the findings are discussed and recommendations offered for further research.

This grounded theory study investigated the identity choices of highly achieving multiracial and multicultural Afro-European and Black immigrant women living in Germany and the role these choices played in their personal constructs of coping and self-empowerment. 10 open-ended narrative interviews, field observations formed the data base; whereby the field observations where used to affirm or disaffirm evolving hypothesis. The historical, social, and cultural context in which these women live is reviewed, and key terms such as racism and discrimination are clarified. The individual racial identity choice and coping strategies were analyzed, and a theoretical model was developed describing the a) causal conditions that influence and form racial identity choices, b) phenomena that resulted from these causal conditions, c) the contextual attributes that influenced type of strategy developed, d) intervening condition that have an impact on the type of strategy developed, e) the strategies themselves, and f) the consequences of those strategies. The components of the theoretical model are first described and then illustrated by narrative excerpts.

The present paper had four goals which all aimed at understanding more of the psychological process taking place when people intentionally distort their answers to a questionnaire. Moreover, possible causes for individual differences in responding to situational demand were investigated. Finally, it was explored whether there were any differences in the criterion validities of different conscientiousness scores. The results of the qualitative and the quantitative analyses show that the psychological process happening when people fake a questionnaire starts with the evaluation of the importance of an item regarding the situational demand. This evaluation is based on specific knowledge, implicit theories, and reasoning. The actual answer then depends on the preference for one of three response sets: regular response (rr), slight faking (sf), and extreme faking (ef). People with high self efficacy of positive self – presentation beliefs tend to endorse extreme categories. Moreover, the actual answer has a solid base in the real conscientiousness score. Finally, it was shown that honest, faked, and MRM corrected conscientiousness scores did not differ in their criterion validity, but in the ranking of people.
