  4. The Body Remembers: Egypt, a Coma and Following the Heart — with Lars Veenstra | #293
Ten years ago, Lars Veenstra hit a tree at 45 km/h. Three days in
a coma, eighteen days in hospital. In Egypt this spring, during a
hip opening on the banks of the Nile, his body went back — not to
the crash, but to the coma.

In late March 2026 I spent ten days in Egypt, seven of them on a
shared journey with Lars. I guided a group through the temples
together with Human Garage, and Lars captured the journey on
camera. We brought together bodywork, consciousness practice and
ancient, sacred places. A lot happened.

So we sat down to talk about it. What Egypt did to Lars and how
he perceived it, working behind the camera while going through it
himself. Why he gave himself a full year to follow only his
heart, and why he falls out of it every day. How a breathwork
retreat showed him he didn't love himself, and how, three years
later, the same practice showed him the opposite. And the
surprising parallel threads between his story and mine.

For me, the most beautiful moments in a conversation are when
something is said that nobody planned and nobody has ever said
that way. This episode had several of them.

About Lars

Lars Veenstra is a Dutch storyteller, filmmaker and photographer,
and the host of the podcast Spirit Unfolding. He grew up filming
downhill mountain bike races and now documents retreats and the
people who change in them.

In this episode

Following the heart for a year — and falling out of it
every day

"What would love do?" — the question Lars keeps
returning to

Flow and meditation — why a four-minute downhill run is
the same doorway

Two breathwork retreats — "I don't love myself", and
three years later, "I love myself"

Egypt — five temples, five days, five regions of the
body; Dendera and the Serapeum at Saqqara

Holding space — serving a group without projecting your
own shadow into it

The body remembers — a coma that surfaced ten years
later, and the love Lars woke up to

The fear of death — and why it may really be the fear of
not having fully lived

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

gefahren, drei Tage Koma.
