Im Mai 2011 findet João einen Pinguin am Strand seiner Insel bei
Rio de Janeiro. Der Vogel hat überall Öl. Er ist fast tot.

João ist 71 Jahre alt. Er ist Rentner. Früher war er Maurer.
Manchmal fischt er. Aber er nimmt den kleinen Pinguin mit nach
Hause, wäscht das Öl ab und gibt ihm jeden Tag Fische.

Nach einer Woche geht es dem Pinguin besser, aber er will nicht
gehen. Er bleibt einfach bei João, viele Monate lang. João nennt
ihn Dindim.

Dann bekommt Dindim neue Federn, und eines Tages ist er weg. Die
Nachbarn sagen zu João: „Das war es. Pinguine kommen nicht
zurück."

Aber im nächsten Juni steht Dindim wieder am Strand. Er geht direkt
zu Joãos Haus. Er kennt den Weg! João kann es nicht glauben.

Seitdem kommt Dindim jedes Jahr zurück. Er schwimmt 8000 Kilometer
von Patagonien nach Brasilien. Er bleibt acht Monate bei João. Dann
schwimmt er wieder zurück.

Der lange Weg ist nicht besonders. Pinguine schwimmen immer weit.
Aber Dindim schwimmt nicht zu irgendeinem Strand. Er kommt jedes
Jahr zu João zurück.


ENGLISH:

In May 2011, João finds a penguin on the beach of his island near
Rio de Janeiro. The bird has oil all over it. It is nearly
dead.

João is 71 years old. He is retired. He used to be a bricklayer.
Sometimes he fishes. But he takes the little penguin home, washes
off the oil, and feeds him fish every day.

After a week, the penguin feels better, but he doesn't want to
leave. He simply stays with João, for many months. João names him
Dindim.

Then Dindim gets new feathers, and one day he's gone. The neighbors
tell João: "That was it. Penguins don't come back."

But the following June, Dindim is standing on the beach again. He
goes straight to João's house. He knows the way! João can't believe
it.

Since then, Dindim comes back every year. He swims 8,000 kilometers
from Patagonia to Brazil. He stays eight months with João. Then he
swims back again.

The long journey isn't special. Penguins always swim far. But
Dindim doesn't swim to just any beach. He comes back to João, every
year.
