DairyTalk 481: More animal contact, better job satisfaction? Where cow-calf rearing reaches its limits - by Helmut Demmelhuber

This podcast episode is based on a scientific study exploring job
satisfaction and personal well-being among Austrian dairy farmers
using different calf-rearing systems. The findings indicate that
cow-calf contact systems can enhance farmer well-being,
particularly in smaller herds where management remains more
manageable. As herd size increases, however, economic and
organizational pressures tend to reduce this advantage. The
research also highlights the importance of agricultural
education, farming background, and positive human-animal
relationships as key drivers of job satisfaction. The study
provides valuable insights into the social sustainability of
dairy farming and the challenge of balancing animal welfare, farm
