The shortage of veterinarians in rural America is becoming a
structural challenge for livestock production systems. This
podcast episode is based on an industry report examining the
economic pressures and working conditions pushing many
veterinarians away from food animal practice. Rising student
debt, mental stress, and unpredictable workloads are increasingly
discouraging young professionals from entering the sector. At the
same time, the report highlights the growing consequences for
animal welfare, farm costs, and food security. The discussion
also questions whether mentorship programs and financial
incentives alone can realistically rebuild long-term veterinary
coverage in rural regions. With comments on a "Progressive
