What happens when hypergrowth meets heritage?

Fernando — Head of Engineering at C&A — has lived in two
completely different tech worlds: IBM enterprise, scale-ups like
Farfetch and HelloFresh, and now one of Europe's most iconic
fashion brands with 1,300 stores.

In the latest episode of Masters of Data & AI, he unpacks the
real story behind C&A's transformation.

A few things that stuck with me:

On operations as a hidden superpower: Traditional
retailers have a discipline around tech ops that scale-ups often
lack. Black Fridays at C&A? "The chillest ones I've had in
years." That stability became the foundation for faster delivery,
not an obstacle to it.

On software engineering as a team sport: No solo genius
ships a platform transformation. Fernando looks for people who
communicate with empathy, collaborate across functions, and keep
the human factor front and centre — especially as AI enters the
delivery pipeline.

On the lesson no book will teach you: Bring conviction,
but stay genuinely open to what the organisation already knows.
Transformation fails when it's done to people instead of with
them.

On AI: C&A is already using Stable Diffusion for garment
design and exploring agent swarms for merchandising and supply
chain. The real opportunity isn't in the hype — it's in getting
the data layer right first.

Does legacy infrastructure give traditional companies an
underrated reliability edge — or does it always slow them down?
