Faultiere müssen mit ihrer Energie sehr sparsam umgehen.
Sie verbringen die meiste Zeit entspannt im Baum, denn manchmal
brauchen sie fast einen Monat, um ein Blatt zu verdauen.Doch einmal
pro Woche kommt der große Moment: Das Faultier steigt ganz langsam
den Baum hinunter. Für diesen wichtigen Moment lohnt sich
sogar die immense Anstrengung.Unten am Boden macht das Faultier ein
kleines Loch mit seinem Schwanz. Dann beginnt der Faultiertanz –
ein vorsichtiges Hin und Her, bevor es ganz diskret aufs
Klo zu gehen versucht.Bis das Faultier mit dem ganzen Klo-Abenteuer
fertig ist, vergeht oft eine halbe Stunde – und
diese heiklen Minuten sind die gefährlichsten seines
Lebens. Mehr als die Hälfte aller Faultiertode passieren genau
dann.Warum nehmen Faultiere dieses Risiko auf sich? Wissenschaftler
sind sich uneinig – vielleicht düngen sie gezielt ihre
Lieblingsbäume, vielleicht ist es bloß ein uraltes Ritual. Sicher

Sloths have to use their energy very sparingly. They spend most of
their time relaxed in the tree, because sometimes they need almost
a month to digest a single leaf. But once a week comes the big
moment: the sloth climbs very slowly down the tree. For this
important moment, even immense effort is worth it. At the bottom,
the sloth makes a small hole with its tail. Then the sloth-dance
begins—a careful back and forth before it discreetly tries to go to
the toilet. By the time the sloth has finished its whole toilet
adventure, often half an hour has passed—and these tricky minutes
are the most dangerous of its life. More than half of all sloth
deaths happen precisely then. Why do sloths take this risk?
Scientists are not in agreement—perhaps they are purposefully
fertilizing their favorite trees, or maybe it is just an ancient
ritual. One thing is sure: No one knows the whole answer. After
pooping, they cover everything with leaves. While pooping, they
often lose up to a third of their body weight—what a relief! Maybe
the sloth story reminds us: Some things just need their time—even
if at first glance they appear otherwise. So: get your book ready.
