Osteosarcoma – a retrospective study In dogs osteosarcoma is rare,
but it is the most common primary bone tumor diagnosed in dogs.
Most osteosarcomas occur in large and older dogs. Most frequent
location site of osteosarcoma in dog is the forderlimb. Diagnosis
depends on histological evaluation, but in radiological
examinations the typical signs are very characteristic. Dogs with
osteosarcoma have an poor prognosis. In more than 90% of cases
micrometastases have been developed at time of clinical
presentation. Beeing treated or being not treated most of the dogs
die on the effects of metastatic disease. Studies of the last years
showed that the usage of different surgical and medical treatment
options results in an improvement of quality of life and survival.
The treatment options are both definitive and palliative. Chosing
an definitive task for treatment of osteosarcoma the surgical
treatment of the affected site by amputation or limb-sparing is the
basic option. It must be combined with adjuvant treatment. The
usage of cisplatin and/ -or doxorubicin results in an significant
improvement of survival. With the usage of neoadjuvant treatment
the tumor process can be minimized on a stage that improves
surgical treatment and after operation the control of process, by
downstaging. Is no chance for surgical treatment, palliative
treatment options must be considered to provide pain control and an
acceptable quality of life. In this case radiotherapy is an
successful option.
