Turn your bike wheel into a colorful persistence-of-vision display with CircuitPython. In this project, I’m using a Feather microcontroller and six high-speed LED strips mounted to the spokes of a bike wheel to display patterns, graphics, and animated images while the wheel spins. A USB battery keeps everything portable, and a magnetic sensor detects wheel speed so the images stay looking good whether you’re cruising slowly or flying down the road. Adding your own artwork is easy — just save a .BMP or .GIF image to the controller. I’ve also included a bunch of ready-to-use images to get you started. POV effects are notoriously difficult to capture on camera, so the video doesn’t quite do it justice. In person, the effect is bright, crisp, and absolutely stunning!
