In this naval episode, I want to tackle the subject of German
cruisers. Ideally, I would have liked to say just a few words
about "cruiser theory" and then move straight on to presenting a
specific ship class. But after reading up a bit on cruisers, I
realized that was impossible. While battleships, aircraft
carriers, submarines, and destroyers have fairly straightforward
structures and few subcategories, cruisers are a class unto
themselves. There are numerous cruiser types and categories,
depending on the era and the country in question.

Some of you might be thinking: "Why? Aren't there just light
cruisers with gun calibers up to 155 mm and heavy cruisers with
calibers around 203 mm — and that's it?" Well, perhaps that was
the case after the naval treaties of the 1920s. But in the period
prior to that, those classifications didn't exist in that form —
and the "heavy cruiser" class didn't exist at all.

Confused? A bit puzzled? Yes, that is exactly why I’m doing this
episode. Sorry about the theory, but unfortunately, it is
necessary.
