Football Beyond the Pitch – A Conversation with Coach Stiga
What happens when football becomes more than just a game?
In this episode, I’m joined by Shafic Nkugwa, better
known as Coach Stiga, the founder of Beyond
Football Academy in Uganda.
We talk about his personal journey, his passion for football and
the story behind building an academy that aims to give young
people more than just football training.
Beyond Football Academy works with children and young people in
the Kinawataka-Katoogo community in Mbuya, Kampala. The academy
combines football with mentoring, life skills, education,
guidance and personal development, with the idea that
sport can create opportunities both on and off the pitch.
In our conversation, Coach Stiga shares his perspective on:
His personal journey into football
From his own experiences growing up to becoming a coach and
mentor.

importance of having people who believe in you.
️ The human stories behind the academy

Coach Stiga and the moments that remind him why this work
matters.
The challenges of building an academy
Limited resources, difficult moments, staying motivated and
continuing to believe in the vision.
The future
Coach Stiga shares his vision for Beyond Football Academy and
what he would build if he had all the resources he needed.
And, of course, we talk about dreams — not just
the dreams of the young footballers he coaches, but Coach Stiga’s
own dreams for the future.
This is a conversation about football, opportunity,
community, mentorship and the belief that a football pitch can
sometimes be the starting point for something much
bigger.
