Mental health is seen as a state of well-being, not just the
absence of a diagnosis. In this episode of Kai's "Healthy
Leadership-Season he explains why mental health at work means more
than "not being ill. He refers to many scientific studies, e.g.
from Corey Keyes' who has introduced the so called "dual continua
model". This model shows that mental illness and positive mental
health are two different dimensions. "Languishing" describes an
often overlooked in-between state: you are not necessarily in
crisis, but you feel flat, empty or on autopilot. The image of the
mental battery shows how pressure, conflict, uncertainty and
constant interruptions can drain energy, and how meaning,
recognition, good relationships and progress can recharge it. The
Job Demands–Resources model explains why high demands combined with
low resources can lead to exhaustion. Recovery is not only a
private matter; it is also a question of work design and company
culture. Constructive leadership is linked to better mental health
in the team, while destructive or unfair behaviour can harm it. Kai
presents three perspectives for understanding behaviour in teams:
Transactional Analysis, systemic thinking, and solution-focused and
hypnosystemic approaches. An he explains that recognition is a
basic psychological need. Honest, specific feedback can make a big
difference. Systemic thinking shifts the focus to context:
behaviour does not arise in isolation, but also from the structures
and expectations in a team. Solution-focused questions help direct
attention to small changes. One simple question is: "How full is
your battery on a scale from 1 to 10, and what would raise it by
one point?" Finally, The Coach Doc names five concrete steps for
leaders: 1. keep an eye on the battery, 2. notice changes, 3. give
permission, 4. protect recovery and 5. know the limits of your own
role PM.
