Susie Ferrier raised three kids in a house that ran at 150 mile
an hour. A country woman from Roma, she built two businesses with
babies in a playpen out the back of the shop, long before anyone
called it a daycare problem, alongside her husband and a
community that watched the Ferrier kids grow up free.

For most people, motherhood is the story of raising them. This is
the story of what happens after.

In this episode, Sam sits down with his mother and walks back
through the years that made her: the self-reliance that rural
women in her era had no choice but to learn, and the honest
reckoning of what running flat out for thirty years cost the
people closest to her.

They talk about the identity that collapses when the children
leave, the five years it took her to find herself again, and the
morning she trained alone in the dark at 60 and discovered
something she'd been missing the whole time. They talk about the
paradigms handed down through the lineage, the ones getting
broken in the next generation, and what she's learned about
presence as the thing that matters most, time as the one thing
you never get back, and the patience it takes to become who you
are after the work is done.
