In loving memory of Miriam Herzfeld.At the age of 14, Miriam
Herzfeld fled Nazi Germany with her family and travelled to Cape
Town, one of the few places willing to accept refugees at the
time.Their ship carried 500 people. After arriving at six in the
morning, they waited until late afternoon while authorities
decided whether they would be allowed to enter South Africa or be
sent back out to sea.Starting with very little — apple crates
became their kitchen cupboards and dyed bedsheets became curtains
— Miriam and her family built an entirely new life in Cape
Town.In this deeply personal conversation, Miriam reflects on
escaping Nazi Germany, her mother’s courage, adapting to a new
language and culture, friendship, love, family, faith, loss and
the mindset that carried her through 103 years of life.Her mother
always told her:“All ends well. It might take a long time, but it
will end well.”Miriam believed in living one day at a time,
keeping your mind active and approaching other people with
openness and kindness. Her greatest lesson was beautifully
simple: smile at people, and often you will receive a smile in
return. Before you know it, a stranger may become a friend.Miriam
passed away peacefully shortly after this interview, at the age
of 103. We feel incredibly grateful that we had the opportunity
to meet her, listen to her and preserve her remarkable story.
