What does it really take to build a successful technology company
and why do so many startups fail before they ever reach scale? In
this episode of the CapricornConnect Podcast, Jakob Barandun speaks
with Marc Wesselink, serial entrepreneur, investor and venture
builder with more than three decades of experience and over 12
companies founded. Marc shares candid lessons from the
entrepreneurial rollercoaster, including successful exits,
failures, an IPO and even bankruptcies. At the heart of his
philosophy is a simple but powerful principle: - don’t fall in love
with your original idea; - listen to the market, understand the
real problem and adapt to what customers actually need. We discuss
why founder–problem fit is one of the strongest predictors of
startup success, why more than 50% of founders in Marc’s research
admitted they had built something the market did not want, and why
raising too much capital too early can become a dangerous
distraction. Marc also explains the challenges of scaling
internationally, the importance of understanding local markets and
jurisdictions, and why many European startups struggle to make the
transition from start-up to scale-up. A major part of the
conversation focuses on Venturerock, Marc’s venture-building
platform designed to reduce friction between founders, investors
and the broader innovation ecosystem. He explains how structured
development milestones, operational support and AI agents can help
founders navigate the journey from idea to scale while spending
less time fundraising and more time building. We also explore
Europe’s technology ecosystem, technology transfer, corporate
