What does it really take to build a successful technology company and why do so many startups fail before they ever reach scale? In this episode of the CapricornConnect Podcast, Jakob Barandun speaks with Marc Wesselink, serial entrepreneur, investor and venture builder with more than three decades of experience and over 12 companies founded. Marc shares candid lessons from the entrepreneurial rollercoaster, including successful exits, failures, an IPO and even bankruptcies. At the heart of his philosophy is a simple but powerful principle: - don’t fall in love with your original idea; - listen to the market, understand the real problem and adapt to what customers actually need. We discuss why founder–problem fit is one of the strongest predictors of startup success, why more than 50% of founders in Marc’s research admitted they had built something the market did not want, and why raising too much capital too early can become a dangerous distraction. Marc also explains the challenges of scaling internationally, the importance of understanding local markets and jurisdictions, and why many European startups struggle to make the transition from start-up to scale-up. A major part of the conversation focuses on Venturerock, Marc’s venture-building platform designed to reduce friction between founders, investors and the broader innovation ecosystem. He explains how structured development milestones, operational support and AI agents can help founders navigate the journey from idea to scale while spending less time fundraising and more time building. We also explore Europe’s technology ecosystem, technology transfer, corporate innovation, customer-centric product development, and what entrepreneurs can learn from the principles behind Apple and Steve Jobs. A conversation about entrepreneurship, failure, capital, innovation and what it really takes to build companies that matter. ️ CapricornConnect — People. Potential. Technology.

CapricornConnect Podcast – Anne Labovitz: The Art of Human Connection What if art could do more than inspire us? What if it could help us feel seen, strengthen communities, support well-being and even bring people together in a divided world? ️ In this episode of the CapricornConnect Podcast, Jakob Barandun speaks with acclaimed contemporary artist Anne Labovitz about the powerful intersection of art, empathy, creativity and human well-being. With more than three decades of artistic practice and projects spanning the United States and internationally, Anne has made human connection a central part of her work. She shares how her grandmother's influence on here art and how this early influence continues to shape her artistic practice. ️ A fascinating part of the conversation is Anne's international project “122 Conversations: Person to Person, Art Beyond Borders,” which brought together intimate conversations with people across different cultures and transformed those encounters into monumental works of art. For Anne, listening is at the heart of creativity: when we slow down and genuinely listen to another person, we create the possibility for connection. ️ Anne also explores the extraordinary power of color. She describes color as her “first language”—a way of communicating emotion and intensity beyond words. From monumental installations to immersive environments, she uses scale, light and color to create experiences that invite people to pause, reflect and experience a sense of awe. ️ The conversation goes further into the emerging relationship between art and health. Anne discusses research suggesting that engaging with art can support well-being, calm the nervous system and contribute to more holistic approaches to healthcare. Her collaborations with healthcare institutions, including the Mayo Clinic, illustrate how visual art can become part of a broader conversation about health and human flourishing. ️ In an increasingly polarized society, Anne believes artists have an important role to play. Through public art, participatory projects and initiatives such as her Well-Being Wall, she creates spaces where people can contribute their voices, encounter the perspectives of others and experience the powerful feeling of being seen. And Anne's philosophy extends beyond art itself. Her personal credo is simple and memorable: “Embrace failure. Show up.” ️ She explains why failure is not the opposite of creativity, but an essential part of discovery and why inspiration is no substitute for consistently showing up and doing the work. ️ A thought-provoking conversation about art, leadership, empathy, mental well-being, creativity, resilience and what it means to create genuine human connection. In this episode, we explore: - The connection between art and human well-being - Why listening can be more powerful than asking the right questions - Art as a vehicle for empathy and community building - The emotional power of color, light and scale - How public art can create moments of awe and connection - The role of creativity in addressing mental health and isolation - Anne's global “122 Conversations” project - How art can help bridge cultural and political divisions - Why artists should embrace failure The importance of showing up every day - The concept of visual optimism - How creativity can help us see and be seen by others CapricornConnect – People. From Grid Constraints to Carbon-Free Compute: Powering the AI Revolution What happens when the rapid growth of artificial intelligence meets an energy grid that was never designed for it? In this episode of the CapricornConnect Podcast, Jakob Barandun speaks with Karl Andersen, entrepreneur, climate technology investor, and founder of Lektra, about the convergence of energy, AI, data infrastructure, and geopolitical resilience. Karl shares the story behind Lektra and the insight that led him to rethink how distributed energy can become a valuable asset. Instead of selling surplus solar power back to the grid at low prices, Lektra enables energy hosts to power edge-scale data centers, creating new revenue opportunities while providing the computing capacity needed for the AI economy. The conversation explores why power, not chips, is increasingly becoming the bottleneck for AI, how hyperscale data centers are putting unprecedented pressure on electricity grids, and why distributed, smaller-scale infrastructure could provide a more resilient alternative. Karl also discusses the growing importance of energy independence, on-premise AI, data sovereignty, and carbon-free compute, as well as the geopolitical risks surrounding critical digital infrastructure. From grid resilience and national security to the future of decentralized energy, the episode looks at how the architecture of the energy system may need to evolve alongside AI. Beyond technology, Karl reflects on entrepreneurship: why companies are processes rather than static entities, the importance of failing fast, listening closely to customers, adapting continuously, and understanding the role of timing, teams, and market conditions in building a global business. In this episode, we discuss: - Why energy is becoming the critical bottleneck for AI - The business opportunity behind distributed energy - Edge-scale vs. hyperscale data centers - How AI is transforming electricity demand - Grid resilience and geopolitical risk - On-premise AI and data sovereignty - Carbon-free compute and decentralized infrastructure - The future of solar, batteries, and distributed computing - Entrepreneurship, customer obsession, and scaling globally - Why energy should be viewed as an asset and an opportunity A conversation about energy, intelligence, resilience, entrepreneurship, and the infrastructure needed to power the next generation of AI. Doch was passiert dabei mit unserer eigenen Kompetenz? ️ CapricornConnect – Mensch. ️ CapricornConnect Podcast – Mensch, Potential, Technologie.
