In this episode, British sociologist Linda Woodhead joins Lisa
Bay and Laura Kuhn to discuss her article Spirituality and
Christianity: an entangled relationship (or, how the marginal
became mainstream). She explains how spirituality has
evolved from a marginalized position to becoming mainstream in
today’s western world, and how this impacts Christianity. Learn
more about how colonial structures have fuelled the spread of
spirituality in the global west and about the subversive feminist
power it holds.


Linda Woodhead is professor and head of department of theology
and religious studies at King’s College London. She is a
sociologist of religion whose books and articles explore the
decline of churches, the rise of spirituality and of nonreligion,
and the values and beliefs of Gen Z.
