Special: Nonviolence under Occupation — A Conversation with Issa Amro

In this episode, I speak with Issa Amro, a
Palestinian human rights defender from Hebron in the occupied
West Bank. Known globally for his commitment to nonviolent
resistance, Issa is the founder of Youth Against
Settlements (YAS) — a grassroots initiative that
documents human rights violations, supports Palestinian
communities, and promotes peaceful civic engagement.


Hebron is one of the most militarized and volatile cities in the
West Bank. Against this backdrop of settler violence and military
repression, Issa has chosen a path of nonviolence — and paid a
high personal price. Arrests, intimidation, and pressure from
both Israeli authorities and the Palestinian Authority have not
deterred him from his mission.


In 2024, Issa and YAS received the Right Livelihood
Award — often referred to as the "Alternative Nobel
Prize" — for “their unshakable nonviolent resistance against the
illegal Israeli occupation and for promoting civic engagement
through peaceful means.”


Issa calls for global action — not only in the form of
statements, but through solidarity, presence, and pressure on
decision-makers. His voice is a powerful reminder that
nonviolence is not weakness, but a courageous and principled
stand in the face of injustice.


This episode is a deep dive into the human cost of
occupation — and the radical power of peaceful
resistance.

palästinensischer Menschenrechtsaktivist aus Hebron im besetzten
Westjordanland. Er ist Gründer von Youth Against

Graswurzelbewegung, die Menschenrechtsverletzungen dokumentiert,
friedliche Proteste organisiert und internationale Solidarität
fördert.


Hebron ist einer der gefährlichsten Orte im Westjordanland –
geprägt von Siedlergewalt und militärischer Präsenz. Issa wählt
dennoch den Weg des gewaltfreien Widerstands und wurde dafür 2024
mit dem Right Livelihood Award ausgezeichnet.
