It is not only the consequences of global warming that are
becoming more tangible, but also the impact on political systems,
where extreme weather events, disruptions to supply chains,
economic crises and migratory movements limit the freedom to
shape the future. Politically, it also threatens democratic
systems by legitimising emergency governments and supporting
anti-democratic and authoritarian tendencies in society. To set
the stage for our podcast series, we define some key terms.
Democracy, as a form of government by the people and for the
people, will be explored and we will discuss the following
questions:
How are Climate Crisis and Democracy interconnected?
Can today's democracies effectively counter the climate
crisis?
Which democratic institutions could help to counter the
climate crisis in a democratic way?
How can we as a society deal with this crisis long term?
