The climate crisis is inextricably linked to issues of human
rights. While adverse effects of global warming are increasingly
felt in all parts of the world, it is often vulnerable
communities in the Global South who contributed the least to the
climate crisis who are affected the worst.
Extreme weather events and slow onset natural desasters threaten
the livelihoods of entire communities. The extraction of fossil
fuels often happen under circumstances that actively harm human
rights. Furthermore, human rights defenders who raise their voice
on these issues become the target of intimidation and violence in
many cases.
In order to fully understand the dimensions of the climate
crisis, it is inevitable to also talk about human rights. This
episode highlights the interconnections between the topics on
different levels and also introduces the case of the local
community of Pari Island in Indonesia fighting back.
Find out more about the litigation case here.
